In a gesture celebrating friendship, shared values and cultural exchange, the Portuguese Business Council – Kuwait has donated two significant works of art to Kuwait’s Museum of Modern Art, transforming a symbolic presentation into a lasting testament to the growing relationship between the two nations.
The donation not only enriches Kuwait’s cultural landscape but also reflects the power of artistic expression to foster dialogue, preserve heritage and strengthen people-to-people ties across continents.
The collection includes a sculpture by Portuguese contemporary artist Miguel Rodrigues and a photographic work by the late Manuel Correia, presented as a lasting expression of friendship, dialogue and mutual respect between the two countries.
The event brought together representatives of Kuwait’s cultural institutions, members of the Portuguese community, diplomats, artists, media representatives and friends of Portugal.
Representing the National Council for Culture, Arts and Letters (NCCAL) and the Museum of Modern Art, Dr. Mohammad Binredha welcomed the initiative, emphasizing the importance of cultural exchange in strengthening understanding between nations and highlighting the museum’s role as a platform for international artistic dialogue.
Addressing the gathering, António Azevedo Campos, President of the Portuguese Business Council in Kuwait and Regional Coordinator of the Portuguese Diaspora Council, said the donation symbolizes more than the transfer of artworks.
“Art humanizes relationships between countries. It speaks before protocol, and it remains after speeches,” he said, adding that the donation gives Portuguese creativity “a permanent place in Kuwait’s cultural memory.”
The donated works hold particular significance as both artists had previously exhibited in Kuwait and collaborated with NCCAL through exhibitions, workshops and cultural exchanges.
Campos noted that the artworks were “not arriving as strangers,” but were returning to a country where a meaningful artistic relationship had already been established.
Rodrigues’ sculpture reflects his contemporary artistic vision inspired by the concept of the “Hyperbaroque,” using gold to explore themes of luxury, power and perception.
Correia’s photograph captures the flowing movement of a traditional Portuguese folk dancer, preserving a moment that reflects identity, memory and cultural heritage.
The event concluded with a message reaffirming Portugal’s appreciation for Kuwait and expressing hope that the donated artworks will serve as enduring symbols of friendship and continued cultural cooperation between the two nations.
